Sun Siyam Resorts, the Maldivian-owned collection of luxury hotels, is one step closer in its transition to renewable energy with the introduction of technology that converts daylight directly into electricity at its flagship Siyam World property.

The solar photovoltaic (PV) system is generating approximately 1,080 kWh of clean energy per day at Siyam World, reducing diesel consumption by an estimated 280 litres daily while lowering the island’s carbon footprint. “Our team has worked hard to bring this project to life, and it is exciting to see solar energy playing a growing role in powering our operations”, said Ausy Waseem, Resort Manager at Siyam World.

The solar programme contributes to several key pillars of Sun Siyam Care, including the transition towards renewable energy, improved resource efficiency, and the development of local expertise. Across the group, these initiatives are expected to generate close to six million kWh of renewable energy annually, while also supporting the training of engineering teams in solar system management and maintenance.

This initiative is another step towards Sun Siyam ‘long term renewable energy roadmap’. The group aims to achieve 50 percent renewable energy usage by 2030.

“Adopt a coral frame" launch

Sun Siyam Olhuveli, part of the Lifestyle Collection within the House of Siyam, has unveiled its newest marine initiative. The Adopt A Coral Frame experience invites guests to take part in nurturing new coral growth by attaching fragments onto specially designed frames that are then placed in the lagoon to form a thriving new reef.

Guests are invited to adopt their chosen coral frame, take part in the planting process, and receive ongoing updates on its development, including photos shared every six months.

Coral reefs play a vital role in the ocean’s ecosystem. They are home to a remarkable variety of marine life, help protect coastlines, and keep the underwater world in balance. Through this initiative, the resort brings this importance to life.

“Earth Day is a reminder that even the smallest actions can shape something far greater,” said Chaminda Upul, Group Sustainability Manager for Sun Siyam. “With Adopt-A-Coral Frame, we wanted to create an experience where our guests can leave a positive mark on the ocean. It’s simple, it’s meaningful, and it stays with you.”

Part of the proceeds from each coral adoption supports Sun Siyam Care, the group’s sustainability platform, contributing directly to ongoing marine conservation efforts and long-term reef restoration.

Waste Upcycling

Sun Siyam Vilu Reef team members have been challenged to transform nautical remnants into functional island pieces as part of their sustainability activities. This follows the important announcement last year of the launch of Siyam World’s Plastic Upcycling Center, designed to turn discarded plastic items, such as oil containers, cleaning product drums and shampoo bottles, into functional products such as sun beds, plant pots and outdoor seating.

Established in collaboration with environment NGO CLEAN Maldives, the upcycling centre is the first of its kind to operate at this scale in the Maldives at a resort. It has extended its operations beyond resort-generated waste to process the plastic from nearby inhabited island Kudafari, reinforcing Siyam World’s role in supporting surrounding communities. In a shared value model, 60% of the upcycled items remain at the resort, while 40% are distributed by CLEAN Maldives, with both partners committing to donating select products for use in public spaces such as island parks, beaches and communal areas.
